🌍 The Story of Nelson Mandela In 1918, in a small village in South Africa, a boy named Rolihlahla Mandela was born. Later, he was given the name Nelson by his teacher. As a child, Nelson saw how unfairly black people were treated under a system called apartheid —a set of laws that separated white people and black people in schools, buses, hospitals, and even neighborhoods. Nelson grew up determined to change this injustice. He studied law and became a lawyer to defend poor and oppressed people. But the government didn’t like his activism. They tried to silence him, but Nelson only grew stronger. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) and became a leader in the fight against apartheid. Because of his beliefs, Nelson was arrested many times. Finally, in 1962, he was sentenced to life in prison. He spent 27 years behind bars, most of them on Robben Island.
